Saturday of Week 1 in Ordinary Time
Heb 4:12-16
Mk 2:13-17
“It is not the healthy who need the doctor but the sick. I did not come to call the virtuous, but the sinners.”
I love both of today’s readings. It gives me such a sense of joy and thankfulness to know that we have Jesus, the Son of God, a high priest who is without sin, who is able to feel our weaknesses, willingly died for us so that we can reconciled into the family of God. That is amazing and something for us to marvel!
This ties in neatly with the Gospel, where Jesus said that “I did not come to call the virtuous, but the sinners.” He came for you and me. Even though Jesus is the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, He is not beyond understanding our weaknesses, our brokenness, and our helplessness. In fact, He sympathizes with our plight and wants to help us, to bring us out of our misery and death, and to bring us into our new life filled with joy!
How many of you have felt unworthy? Have you ever felt excluded? Well, I have news for you. All that brokenness and lies that the world heaped upon us, is dispelled. Jesus, the Son of God, is telling us that He loves us. He came to teach us and to help us navigate the pitfalls of life so that we can become a member of God’s family! Yes, we are undeserving and flawed, but we are not worthless because we are loved! We are deemed to be worth the blood of Christ. And that, my friends, is priceless.
