1 March, Saturday — Re-creating our encounter with Jesus

Saturday of Week 7 in Ordinary Time

Ecc 17:1-13
Mk 10:13-16

I tell you solemnly, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it

I enjoy attending First Holy Communion Mass in my parish because it allows me to see the joy of children receiving Jesus for the very first time. They are all excited about receiving Jesus in their lives and this allows them to enter into a deeper relationship with Jesus. In some sense, the Gospel of today reminds me of the importance of always reorienting my life towards a child-like faith.

The disciples wanted to chase the children away because they were disrupting Jesus’s work. However, Jesus work was to reach out everyone in a very personal and human way. The call by Jesus is one that is personal – which enters into the depths of our hearts. From there will come our personal response and children show us the way in which our faith can be lived out fully. As I continue to work in Church ministry, I sometimes think that there is a need to possess structure and frameworks to guide people. Yet, ultimately becasue we in church are in the line of helping everyone discover Jesus; it goes down to the initial encounter we had with Jesus and how we can continue to renew that in our daily lives.

The encounter where we meet Jesus in our daily lives is something that only we know. It is our duty to re-create this encounter to others in our daily lives through our actions and words. We read the Gospel every day but for some people, we could be the only Gospel they read in their lives. As we start the month of March, may we discover the importance of re-kindling the faith in our lives so that we can share the same infectious joy of children who have received Jesus in their First Holy Communion.
