10 June, Tuesday — No situationships, please

Tuesday of Week 10 in Ordinary Time

2 Cor 1:18-22
Mt 5:13-16

Remember it is God himself who assures us all

There exists in modern parlance, a term — ‘situationship’ — which is a situation where both parties are in a relationship, but without the associated norms and expectations of being in one. Perhaps this stems from commitment phobia, or even the general disdain for fitting into a conventional understanding of a relationship. The readings of today remind us that Jesus wants every part of us to love Him fully.

St Paul, in the first reading, reminds us that God is always a ‘Yes’ to all the promises He makes. This is indeed a very assuring consolation,, given that each one of us struggles with the vagaries and uncertainties which life brings. The desire to have control over the various circumstances in our lives seems almost desirable, but there are often many circumstances which happen that are beyond our control. In all things, it is better for us to say ‘Yes’ to God in all the things we do and in doing so, we will bring glory to His name.

In the Gospel of today, we read about the need to unashamedly become the light of the world. This may seem like a metaphor to the ordinary reader, but I have found that it is important for us to remember that in the world of today — where there is confusion and dissension — it is all the more important to have a good role model for all to follow. This means that we must continue to allow the love of God to consume us, until we have become totally one with Jesus. Only then can we move away from a ‘situationship’, to that of a loving relationship with Jesus — which is an example for the world to learn from.
