Christmas Day — Midnight Mass
Isa 9:1-7
Tit 2:11-14,22-25
Lk 2:1-14
…a light has shone.
A few years ago, with my extended family, we spent three weeks in Melbourne. What was really special was the time we spent on the Great Ocean Road, especially at Warrnambool, one of the last places along the Great Ocean Road.
One of the most beautiful parts of the trip was our time outdoors. On the second day, my wife suggested we spend some time in the night, on the generously sized veranda just staring into the night sky.
It was amazing.
Instead of the typical sparse night sky I was accustomed to seeing in Singapore, I came face to face with a sky full of sparkling stars of various sizes. Instead of ‘plain’ darkness, we were greeted with so much light and beauty.
In that instant, I felt like one of the “people that walked in darkness” the passage talks about. What also struck me was that it took me flying thousands of kilometres away from my everyday life to experience this.
I found out later that the reason why I could not see the stars back home was light pollution, where the overwhelming availability of artificial lights overpowered the natural lights.
What a fantastic analogy of what we go through.
What we experience in our daily lives — the hustle and bustle, the ‘busyness’, the gadgets, the toys, our hobbies, our passions… all tend to outshine the presence of God in our lives. When we find a way of removing these distractions, we can truly see God. We see how He surrounds us and is much bigger than all our pursuits and distractions.
Let us plan regular time to reconnect to this wonderful God of ours.
Have a Blessed Christmas, everyone.
