Isa 62:11-12
Tit 3:4-7
Lk 2:15-20

The Lord is king, let earth rejoice.

In today’s world, we have very few royal families, and very few kings. But we have a lot of leaders in all countries. When leaders are inaugurated, there are mixed reactions from the crowd. Even if there are those who are against the inauguration of a leader, there will most likely be celebratory events. What are people really celebrating during this time?

Perhaps it’s because someone they could trust to provide a better life became a leader. Or maybe there would be someone who would set direction. It may even be resonating with what they represent. Maybe it’s simply a triumph over a competitor.

It’s amazing how much preparation and resources are spent on these celebrations. Think of King Charles’ coronation. It was a splendid affair covered my many journalists. It was watched worldwide. In fact, the celebrations started way before with promotions, advertisements, and invitations to many world leaders. I have very little stake in who becomes a king, but even I gave in to curiosity. And all these types of celebrations for human kings and leaders.

This image of how we extol human leaders and kings makes me think of how much more we should celebrate for our Lord, our King. Today’s psalm says that because our Lord is King, we should rejoice! Indeed, there are many things to rejoice about.

He came to make our lives better. Once, we lived in darkness, and he brought light to the world. He gave us food that lasts for eternity. He welcomed us into his family.

He has given us direction. He made it such that we each have vocations, allowing us to do good on his behalf. In fact, God made us so that we have a part to play in his redemptive works. What great trust and reasons for living he has given us!

He is also perfectly just. With God, we know where we stand. At the same time, he is boundlessly merciful. We are not worthy to receive him, but he makes us worthy of his love. It is truly amazing that he is our King.

The Lord is King, let us really bask with joy and rejoice that He is our King!
