2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Isa 62:1-5
1 Cor 12:4-11
Jn 2:1-11
“Do whatever he tells you.”
The Wedding at Cana has been an account that I have heard countless times over. We know how Jesus turns water into wine at the request of His mother, Mary. But this time, as I think and reflect about this passage of the Gospel, I approach it from the perspective of Mary our Mother — the one who, without any hesitation or apprehension, goes directly to her Son to ask for His intervention.
I used to see this story of how Jesus would definitely listen to His mother’s request; much like how she can arm-twist Him into doing what she asks. But in fact, I think the more important point in this passage is when she tells the servants to “Do whatever he tells you”. She is, in fact, telling you and I to be open and obey His direction. And to be open is to truly submit ourselves to the will of God, knowing that His plans are way better than what we think is good for us.
Often, we may want an outcome or solution to a problem in a particular way and disregard what others might tell us; and we even go to God with requests – the way we want it to be. But perhaps the challenge for you and I today is to be like Mary; just trusting and knowing that God will work for the good of those who love Him (Rm 8:28).
Today, as I read and listen to this Gospel narration, I’m prompted to not pray with a fixed mindset of what I think the best solution to my problem is, but to be open and surrender my will to Jesus and to do whatever He tells me to. So that even if the outcome does not meet what I had expected, I will be fully at peace, knowing that I am in a situation that God wants me to be right now; and that He has better plans for me.
(Today’s OXYGEN by Nicholas Lee)
Prayer: Lord, help me to be open to whatever you tell me to do, so that I can be at peace knowing that You only want what is best for me.
Thanksgiving: Thank you Lord, for gift of Mother Mary, who is a beacon of faith and obedience to us all.
