25 June, Wednesday — Our True Selves

Wednesday of Week 12 in Ordinary Time

Gen 15:1-12,17-18
Mt 7:15-20

“Beware of false prophets who come to you disguised as sheep…”

As an enthusiastic social media user, I appreciate the diverse content available. However, how some posts are crafted to showcase individuals most favourably is particularly fascinating. For example, I have seen multiple posts where these individuals enthusiastically show off their large homes, exotic cars or luxurious holidays they take. I must admit to being impressed, although not for long.

Some time ago, I found out that many of these homes or cars were rented by these influencers to create content to impress others and increase their followers. I have met people who have pooled their money to purchase (old) exotic cars in multiple names. These owners will present themselves as ‘living the life’, taking turns to drive on pre-designated days.

In today’s Gospel, the Lord teaches us to judge people by their fruits. Applying these to the influencers, their lifestyles may appear to be attractive. Over time, however, inconsistencies will most likely become apparent, and the facade will disappear.

Similarly, as Christians, we must be conscious of being authentic Christians. It is crucial that we continue to develop a close relationship with God and place Him at the centre of our lives. So, how do we do this?

Taking our cue from growing good fruit, we must ensure our fruit trees are planted in good soil, roots adequately watered and fertilised, and pests removed. In terms of our spiritual fruit, it would mean we would need to:

  • Connect with our Lord through prayer and reflection daily;
  • Surround ourselves with authentic and godly people;
  • Avoid situations of sin;
  • Prioritise authenticity as Christians

Brothers and sisters, let us pray for the Holy Spirit’s continued guidance.

(Today’s OXYGEN by Paul Wee)

Prayer: Dear Father God, help us always to prioritise the importance of bearing good fruit for You. Help us to value authenticity as Your children.

Thanksgiving: Lord Jesus, we are grateful for Your example and of those saints who have come before us. May we always turn to You and allow You to lead our lives as authentic Christians.
