25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Amo 8:4-7
1 Tim 2:1-8
Lk 16:1-13
“You cannot be the slave both of God and of money.”
When I first read this parable as a child, I was confused. I thought, “Why would Jesus tell a story where a steward is rewarded for morally questionable actions?”
More than a decade later, as I reflected on the passage today, I realised it’s not about rewarding dishonesty. Instead, it’s about building meaningful relationships — whether with clients, colleagues, or friends.
As a friend, I sometimes notice that I only show up in conversations to ask for favours or, in the Singaporean way, to complain. If someone has interests or hobbies different from mine, I struggle to find common ground. Honestly, I don’t even know how to feign interest consistently!
So today’s Gospel challenges me. I realise that I often lack foresight in preparing for my future. I don’t feel shrewd or successful. I’ve lost jobs and friendships, and sometimes, I feel like I’ve failed to build the kind of networks the steward built.
Thankfully, the good news is that Jesus calls us to the same urgency; not about money, but about how we use our lives and resources for the kingdom of God. That means being compassionate, faithful, and intentional with what we have, be it our time, our words, or our small acts of kindness and generosity.
(Today’s OXYGEN by Brenda Khoo)
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to use the gifts, time, and relationships You have given me wisely. Teach me to act with generosity, compassion, and faith, so that even small acts can build connections that honour You. Amen.
Thanksgiving: We thank You, Lord, for the people You place in my life, such as friends, colleagues, and strangers. Thank you for the opportunity to love and serve others, and for guiding me to use my life intentionally for Your kingdom. Amen.
