9 October, Friday, — Look for something wonderful today

Friday of Week 27 in Ordinary Time

Gal 3:7-14
Lk 11:15-26

Great are the works of the Lord, to be pondered by all who love them.

One of the subjects I took back in university was cell biology. I still remember that there were so many steps within a single cell for one process to take place properly. And that’s just within one cell. An adult male has 36 trillion cells, and an adult female has 28 trillion cells. Can you imagine how many processes are happening within your body just by you reading this reflection? Can you imagine how many processes are synchronized, how many molecules are synthesized or broken down, just so we can read?

It’s no wonder many scientists have turned to God. Louis Pasteur actually said that science brings man to God. Who would not be amazed by the wonder of God’s creation? Who would not be enchanted by being surrounded with so many beautiful things that God had created?

One of the things I do to unwind is to colour. I have a colouring book of flowers and because I started colouring, I sometimes find myself staring at different flowers that I come across. I want to replicate the colours I see. Within a short moment of observing, I could see that the colours are not always even. I can see where one colour ends, and another begins. I can see lines in petals, dew marks in leaves, and even places where the insects have fed. As I behold the sight, I find myself starting to think how God created everything around me. And I find myself thinking how God created me.

While not all of us may be able to walk around nature and enjoy it, perhaps looking at ourselves and pondering how God created us will help us praise God today.

Imagine God saying,

‘This is my son/daughter. I am going to take my time to make him/her beautiful. What should I do for the hair? I think this colour would suit him/her good. For the eyes, maybe something brown. Let me make this a little darker. For the nose, let me pick this. Now let me draw the eyebrows. Let me get some red for the lips. I think this shape is perfect… Oh, I’m now making his/her fingers. Let me take time, because everyone should have a different set of finger prints…’

When we look for something wonderful today, let us remember that we are one of those wonderful creations of God. In fact, we are God’s masterpiece! Brothers and sisters, let us ponder on this today.

Prayer: I praise you, Father, for the wonder of your creations.

Thanksgiving: Thank you, Father, for I am wonderfully made.
